Mieke Marple (b. 1986) is an artist and writer who works in painting, generative art and video. Her work often combines humor, mythology and personal narrative to explore cultural archetypes. Her paintings use a neon palette and repurpose older European imagery from a feminist perspective. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
Marple received a B.A. in Fine Art from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2008 and co-owned Night Gallery in Los Angeles from 2011 to 2016. In her 2018 exhibition “Relocation Tarot” she drew herself as The Fool, which she has said reflected how she felt about making art after a ten-year hiatus. That year she was an artist in residence at the Internet Archive, where she began the series Erotic Garden. The series alters etchings by the early twentieth-century artist Marquis von Bayros through cropping, color and added elements to give them a contemporary feminist perspective. Her 2019 exhibition “God is an Audiobook” at 1301PE presented paintings that layer archetypes such as skeletons, clowns and ballerinas with realistically rendered flowers. “Tarot Reckoning” (2021) consisted of three painted cards, The Moon, The Lovers and Death. The Lovers card shows two Sumatran tigers embracing.
