Michael Kozlowski, known as mpkoz, is an American media artist and software developer based in Seattle, Washington.,,Working primarily in real-time graphics, mixed reality, and interactivity, he writes code that generates video, digital sculpture, and software applications, exploring “the transition of media as it crosses from two to three dimensions, from paint on canvas to pixels on a display or 3D mesh”.
Kozlowski was born in Kalispell, Montana, where his mother worked as a graphic designer and his father as a fine art printer.,He studied film at the University of Southern California, discovering creative coding through an elective in his final year.,He began making generative art around 2016, while still in college.Kozlowski later worked as a software developer at mixed reality technology companies, including on Microsoft's Hololens research and development team, before quitting in June 2021 to work as an artist full time.,
Later in 2021he released the Art Blocks generative series Chimera, merging still life painting with code across twelve stroke styles and eight flower species drawn from impressionist and expressionist traditions. He directed proceeds from its charitable allocation to cancer research after his mother's diagnosis with multiple myeloma. In 2023he released the long-form generative collection Metropolis, which explores node-based systems in cities, computing, and blockchains through five city traits keyed to New York, Berlin, London, Mexico City, and Los Angeles.Avant Arte partnered with him to offer physical diptych prints of Metropolis, pairing each online edition with a second piece minted after visiting the depicted city.Bright Moments developed a distinct collector experience for the project, inspired by its CryptoCitizens live-minting events. His series Mecha, written entirely in GLSL and JavaScript, extended a photoreal painting algorithm he had developed over two years into hyper-textured, uncanny compositions later issued as prints through Avant Arte.,
For Bright Moments' 2024 Finale Collection, Kozlowski taught himself signed distance fields, a shape-rendering technique, producing a small relief-like piece in about a month from roughly seven kilobytes of code. He described it as a departure from the photorealistic paint simulation of Metropolis and Chimera toward a new technical direction. In 2024 Art Blocks issued his Bokeh (lamps) lantern sculptures as part of the platform's first physical curated release, for which he wrote the algorithm generating each sculpture's cut acrylic baffle patterns. He presented the wall relief and floor sculpture series Tessellations, fusing circuit board and algorithmic patterning with architectural and textile design, with Heft Gallery at “Zero 10”, Art Basel Miami Beach's digital art section, in December 2025.,
