Bio

Merzmensch (Vladimir Alexeev) is an artist, writer and cultural theorist who connects the historical avant-garde with generative AI. Raised in Moscow, he immigrated to Germany in the 1990s and later completed a PhD on the historical avant-garde. In the early 2000s he adopted the pseudonym Merzmensch in tribute to the Dadaist Kurt Schwitters, whose MERZ art shaped his own practice.

Central to his work is reMERZ, a generative poetry project trained on his own texts that treats artificial intelligence as a creative collaborator rather than a tool. In October 2025, during Art on Tezos week in Berlin, he presented the generative poetic series reMERZ: Merzazine Edition. His work Polychromatic Contemplation was included in the 2024 exhibition “Paul Klee Digital” at the Kulturmuseum Bern, an international showcase of digital artists responding to Paul Klee curated by Jürg Kobel.^, His 2024 piece Retrofuturist Memories was shown in the 2025 group exhibition “Wintermute and Neuromancer” at FLUSS in Wolkersdorf, Austria, which examined AI's utopian and dystopian potential through the lens of William Gibson's Neuromancer.

In addition to his art, Merzmensch writes for publications including Harper's Magazine and EIKON. He has contributed essays to The AI Art Magazine across multiple issues, including "Generative Age" and "Dreaming in Three Dimensions."^, For the magazine he has also interviewed artists including Sasha Stiles and Emi Kusano.^,
