Matsys is the design studio founded in 2004 by the American architect Andrew Kudless.,The studio explores the emergent relationships between form, growth, and material systems, working across drawings, furniture, lighting, and architecture through digital fabrication, generative modeling, and code. Its work has entered the permanent collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the FRAC Centre in Orléans, France.
Kudless holds a Master of Arts in Emergent Technologies and Design from the Architectural Association and a Master of Architecture from Tulane University. Since 2006 the studio has produced its P_Wall series, a set of precast concrete facade panels cast using flexible fabric formwork. Its design process typically begins with experiments in raw material and code, and only later incorporates the constraints of a specific site and program.Confluence Park, a shell-form concrete pavilion realized with the architecture firm Lake|Flato in San Antonio, received a 2019 AIA National Honor Award.,That same year, Kudless became the first American designer to contribute to Louis Vuitton's Objets Nomades collection.
Its smaller objects apply the same computational approach: Diploid Lamp II, 2010, is built from nearly 1,000 laser-cut parts that lock together without glue,while Spore Lamps, 2013, are hand-assembled from wood micro-veneers modeled on the way plant spores scatter and settle.For day2day Tokyo, 2015, a robotic arm scripted by the studio searched a location's most-liked Instagram photos and translated their outlines into ink-brush paintings, producing a scroll of 250 scenes over two weeks.By 2022 the studio was also using AI-generated imagery to explore new architectural forms.
