Martin Grasser is an artist and designer based in the Bay Area, California, whose work explores systems and forms of repetition.He works across corporate design, fine art and type design, treating letterforms, words and sentences as artworks in their own right.,Since 2022 he has extended that practice onto the blockchain with generative art collections including Squares and LOVE Tennis Art Project.,
Grasser earned a BFA in Illustration from ArtCenter College of Design in 2009.He later founded the studio And Repeat, whose commercial clients have included Twitter, Nike and SoftBank.,As design director at the studio West, he contributed to a redesign of Twitter's bird logo and later made the Choose Go film for Nike.,His 2021 typeface Color Dot Font received a prize nomination in Experimental Work from the Tokyo Type Directors Club.
In 2022 Grasser released Squares on the Art Blocks platform, combining and overlapping squares at varying scales to create interplays of color, structure and atmosphere.,That same year, ARTXCODE released his LOVE Tennis Art Project in collaboration with Art Blocks.In 2023 Grasser collaborated with the generative art pioneer Vera Molnár on Themes and Variations, an on-chain series released through Sotheby's and built on the Art Blocks Engine. The two artists manually curated the collection's 500 pieces from an algorithm exploring the letters N, F and T.,It was Molnár's first work minted on a blockchain.She died in late 2023, a few months after the collection's release.,Grasser has said he shares “the same fascination and love for letters, typography, words, sentences and paragraphs of text” that shaped Molnár's own work.
