Marnix Keller is a generative artist who writes his own code, without AI assistance, to create 3D and 2D digital artworks. He builds 3D pieces with Python in Blender and 2D work in Python, Java, or JavaScript, often using the browser-based coding environments Processing, p5js, and CodePen.
Keller began drawing as a teenager, copying ink pen illustrations from the British magazine 2000 AD into notebooks. He studied technical drawing and illustration at college, then taught 2D and 3D computer-aided design using AutoCAD, Microstation, and 3D Studio Max, work that introduced him to coding. He works by day as a freelance developer, building applications and data visualizations, alongside his generative art practice. In Gentle Force, swirling flow fields of color represent the movement of water and air, shifting and blending across the piece. Another body of work draws on real-time data about astronauts in space, turning each astronaut's name into a color gradient. The first-name initial sets the hue and the last-name initial sets the saturation. Brightness shifts from light to dark as the piece spins around a rendering of the earth.
