Mark Amerika (American, b. 1960) is an artist and writer whose work crosses net art, video, sound and literature through an ongoing practice of remix.He founded the Alt-X Online Publishing Network in 1993and, at the University of Colorado Boulder, became the first artist appointed Professor of Distinction.
In 1997 he released GRAMMATRON, an online hypertext narrative that was selected for the 2000 Whitney Biennial.He followed it with PHON:E:ME (1999), a sound art work commissioned by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art in Western Australia.His hypertext film FILMTEXT was initially commissioned by Sony PlayStation 2 and shown as part of a major retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.In 2005 he sold a DVD edition of FILMTEXT to a private collector for $10,000.
In 2011 he released Immobilité, which he has called the first mobile art movie, made using mobile phone technologies, and shown at events including the Hyperstrata exhibition at ISEA 2011.That year he also published Remixthebook (University of Minnesota Press), pairing the book with a companion website that remixes essays by other writers and artists into the text.In 2012 he released Museum of Glitch Aesthetics, a multi-platform net artwork commissioned by the Abandon Normal Devices festival in conjunction with the London Olympic and Paralympic Games. In 2022 Stanford University Press published his My Life as an Artificial Creative Intelligence as the inaugural title in its Sensing Media series.
In 2023 he began collaborating with Will Luers and sound artist Chad Mossholder as the collective PHC on Posthuman Cinema, ten NFT video works styled as black-and-white cinépoèmes influenced by filmmakers including Agnès Varda, Michelangelo Antonioni and Andy Warhol. Amerika generated the text and voiceover scripts using a large language model he customized himself, while Luers produced the AI-generated imagery.
