Margaret Murphy is an American artist, writer, and curator who works across photography, collage, and artificial intelligence to explore nostalgia, self-representation, and identity in early internet culture.,She earned an MFA from the University of Hartford's Limited Residency Program in Photography in 2021.,
Murphy's early work centered on feminist, social media-driven self-portraiture. Around 2022 she began combining that background in photography with AI-generated imagery.The same year she joined the Web3 art community, later serving as Storytelling Manager at EXPANDED.ART and Social Media Associate at QuantumArt.Her work has since been exhibited in Berlin, New York, London, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC, and released as NFTs through Heft, QuantumArt, and EXPANDED.ART. It has been featured in Monopol, Numéro Berlin, Der Greif, and EXPANDED.ART Magazine. She has also photographed for The New York Times.
In 2023 her AI-generated works Desert Views and American Uncommon reimagined mid-century American photography for the metaverse. They were shown in the group exhibition “Techno Terrain: Nature in the Age of the Metaverse” in Berlin.Murphy is a co-founder of The Second-Guess, a curatorial collective based in Berlin and Los Angeles that examines the relationship between humans and technology.With Anika Meier and Leah Schrager, she co-curated “The Second-Guess: Body Anxiety in the Age of AI” at HEK Basel from January to March 2025. The show marked the tenth anniversary of the 2015 exhibition “Body Anxiety”.
In early 2025 Murphy began her ongoing series I Wrote Her Into Existence, inspired by the artist duo Malpractice's work with their AI agent Flynn.For the project she trained a custom GPT model on her teenage diaries, creating a digital twin she calls Teen Margaret.,Through conversations, poems, AI-generated images, and video, the project explores memory, authorship, and identity.It was included in the 2026 group exhibition “I've missed our conversations. On AI, Emotions, and Being Human”, curated by Anika Meier at Schlachter 151 by OOR Studio in Berlin.
