mandolinaes is the alias of the Spanish photographer Beatriz Urrutia, whose images are accompanied by poetic writing that she has described as visual poems. She studied mathematics before turning to photography as a way to express what she could not say in words, and most of her pieces stand alone rather than belonging to a series.
In her collection Ghost Ships Memories, made at Cabo de Gata, she gave first-person voices to abandoned, rust-eaten fishing boats, writing their stories so they would not be forgotten.,In 2021 she began exploring cryptocurrencies and discovered the NFT ecosystem, minting her first NFT in June 2021 and making her first sale two months later. Her work has since been published on Foundation, OpenSea, MakersPlace and Nifty Gateway, and she mints all of her pieces through Manifold, which she has said lets artists retain control over their work.
Urrutia has also incorporated AI tools into her practice, producing the collection Anatomy of a Soul, in which roses and petals stand in for the body's organs and the emotions tied to them.,Individual pieces from the collection, including The Heart and The Brain, were shown at Artcrushgallery in Ghent in October 2022, and The Brain was shown again at the ETH Conference in Boston in April 2023. Her work has also been exhibited at the Crypt Gallery and imnotArt Gallery in New York and Chicago, and at NFT.NYC in 2023 and 2024.
