Joshua Stevenson is a Vancouver-based sound engineer and media artist who has worked in audio recording, mixing, mastering and post-production sound for more than two decades.,Outside his mastering work he makes experimental music and video and generative visual art, performing and releasing under the name magneticring.
Stevenson interned at Ardent Studios in Memphis in 1994 and has since mastered albums for independent labels including Sublime Frequencies, Siltbreeze and Akuphone.,His mastering credits include Cindy Lee's Diamond Jubilee (2024), which Pitchfork included on its list of the best albums of 2024, as well as records by Alvarius B. of Sun City Girls and by Bernardino Femminielli.
Under his own name he has also released experimental music, including the 2023 album tropic of you, recorded as live improvisations on a Yamaha TG33 tone generator straight to two-track tape with minimal post-processing.
Under the name magneticring, also known as FM SHADES, he has produced a long-running series of eclectic DJ mixes spanning psychedelic, garage, post-punk, hard rock and Bollywood psychedelia, alongside video DJ sets.He also makes generative, code-based visual art under this name, publishing a portfolio of browser-based works, including Luma Sheen, Melded Light and Psychotropic Paintings, that generate a new iteration each time the page is reloaded.
He works as the studio technician for the New Media and Sound Arts program at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, where he hosts workshops in sound synthesis, field recording and multichannel installation.
