Luiz André Gama is a Brazilian new media artist based in Italy, working across digital art, video installations, and live performance. His portfolio also spans contemporary collage and generative art, built on a mathematical approach he calls recursion, which relies on self-similar, nested repetition to generate patterns, colors, and images iteratively. He works in visual programming environments such as TouchDesigner and Vuo.
Gama has also worked as a VJ under the name Vj Lab, performing in Brazil and abroad, and lived three years in Spain before settling in Italy. As a VJ he performed at clubs and festivals in Brazil and Europe, including a 2007 date for Cocoon Club at Privilege in Ibiza, alongside the DJs Sven Väth and Miss Kittin. The The Recursive Series reworks old public-domain photographs and film stills using recursive algorithms, turning found portraits into fractal-faced figures.,Gama has described the series as inspired by the illustrations of M.C. Escher and by “mystery noire TV shows from the early 20th century”.One work in the series, The Graeae, shows three bug-faced figures at a coffee table with legs that stretch into infinity, a nod to Greek mythology. In the Relevos series, vibrant color and animation explore form and movement.
In Light Traps, a 2022 series programmed in TouchDesigner, moving elements generate rings of light that static reflectors bounce back into animated, harmonic patterns.Reflections, also from 2022, reconstructs a hidden seed image from points that move through recursive iterations.Eclipsing Geometry, begun in 2025, studies the negative space created between geometric shapes.Gama showed the RGB Dreams and Reflections series in Miami in December 2023, exhibiting at Beyond Basel and Scope International Contemporary Art alongside Art Basel Miami. In 2025 he performed live video for Scappo di Casa with DJ Andy Smith of Portishead in Abruzzo, Italy, and exhibited at “TouchDesigner Event Tokyo”.,
