Luis Ponce is a Mexican media artist based in Montreal who makes vividly oversaturated gifs and films built from impossible, spiraling perspectives.,He has named M.C. Escher as a direct influence on this perspective-bending style. In his own words, his work draws on “cosmogonic myths, posthumanism, the human mind, perception of light and everyday experiences”.
Ponce trained in graphic design and video post-production, and studied at traditional art workshops at the Old Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City.Earlier in his career he painted commissioned skatepark and mosaic murals, including the Templo Mayor Skatepark mural in Mexico City in 2014 and a mural at the Gilbert Lindsay Skatepark in Los Angeles.,
His 2022 work Reminders of the insane was shown in “The Medici Collection” exhibitions in New York that year.,His work The Loss of Tangibility sold through Sotheby's, and Ambivalence and Never coming home were released on OpenSea, alongside other pieces sold through Christie's and SuperRare.,In 2023 he collaborated with Avant Arte on And The Absurd Was Born, an augmented-reality print in which serpents appear to wrap around posthumanist figures. He described the print as an exploration of “those distorted views and often misguided perceptions or beliefs for which we decide to sacrifice ourselves”.His work has also been shown at “The Gateway” during Art Basel Miami and Seoul Korea Blockchain Week, and included in group exhibitions in Dubai, London, and Venice.
