The Scottish artist Lola Dupré is a collage artist and illustrator who cuts and layers paper and photographs into surreal, distorted portraits of people, animals and architecture.,,,Her technique of repeating and offsetting fragments of the same image echoes the early twentieth-century Dada movement, particularly the photomontages of Hannah Höch and George Grosz, whose work she encountered as a child.,
Dupré works almost entirely by hand, cutting photographs with scissors and reassembling them with glue, and uses digital software only to crop and correct color afterward. She has said she finds the invisible pattern of her cuts as satisfying as the finished image. As she put it, “I am happy first with the invisible pattern of cuts, you could almost say brush strokes, and secondly with the image itself”.Though Scottish and once based near Glasgow, she lives and works near Valencia, Spain.,She has described walking in nature near her home as a source of inspiration, recalling that the mountain slopes near Granada shaped her approach to portraiture, since a face is “a range of fleshy mountains punctuated with features”.
In October 2021 her paper collage Coby, made on a wood panel, was featured in Electric Artefacts' Tezos Halloween Special selection of new work.In April 2024 Fakewhale Gallery opened its Solo Series with El Gato, presenting two paper-collage cat portraits: Scooter, released as an open edition, and Linus, released as an edition of fifteen. Discussing the release, she said her work remains “always physical, always paper”, adding that “the motivation is not the technique, only the final image is important”.
Her collage illustrations have appeared in TIME, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and WIRED, and she has been commissioned by Nike and Penguin Books. Her work has been included in the Pictoplasma exhibition at the Museum for Contemporary Art (MARCO) in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2015, and in the Illustrative Festival at Direktorenhaus in Berlin in 2013.She took part in the group exhibition “Division of Birds”, curated by Christopher Jobson at Paradigm Gallery in Philadelphia in 2022, and in “Companions” at Joy Machine in Chicago in 2025.,Her animal portraits, such as the many-eyed kitten Squits, have also featured in the recurring Cat Art Show in Los Angeles.,
