Lilyillo (Australian, b. 1981) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Canberra who works across watercolour, drawing and AI-based digital mediums. Lilyillo's work explores personal history, family memory and notions of craftsmanship through recurring acts of making and unmaking, and has been exhibited internationally at venues including Artmatr in Brooklyn and the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Lilyillo studied at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney, completing a Bachelor of Art History and Theory, a Master of Art Administration and Curatorial Studies, and a Master of Fine Arts majoring in drawing. Lilyillo received the Australia Council for the Arts' New Work Emerging Artist Grant in 2006 and completed residencies at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and Deveron Arts in Huntly, Scotland, in 2008.The 2023 series Architects in Chairs pictured architects suspended in chairs against spacious, wood-grained backgrounds rendered in pastel hues.That September, the series Woodside was included in “Nostalgia”, the inaugural exhibition of the AI art gallery Skalda, curated by Chris Maestas.,Later that year, Lilyillo's work was also shown in “HOMAGE” at the Constantin Brâncuși Centre of the Craiova Art Museum in Romania, curated by None and Claire Silver.
In the 2024 series Plans for Future Forms, Lilyillo used an AI inpainting process to erase the human figures from the chair compositions, leaving the chairs empty and fragmented.The series was inspired by a childhood drawing lesson from Lilyillo's father, an architect, about perspective and foreshortening,and was featured by Fellowship as part of “Post-Photographic Perspectives III”, curated by Alejandro Cartagena.In July 2024, Lilyillo took part in the debut release of Fakewhale's “ART MARKET” format on Foundation.,
