Lands, the name under which Peter Russell works, is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in inquiry into the entanglement of perception, landscape and climate. He asks how the sociocultural lens through which we view landscape shapes our experience of place, and how landscape functions as a visual medium with the power to shape experience.
His work spans digital video, drawing, painting and sculpture.Mediate (2011) and On Flatness (2017) are both digital video pieces exploring landscape as image.In 2021 he made Caspian Tern, a digital video created in collaboration with Disappearing Birds of North America, a project by Jen Delos Reyes.The following year he produced Field Observation: Tulip Poplar, a single-channel video installation using a survey tripod,and Suns, a documented performance piece.
In 2023 his practice turned toward physical materials: Interior Landscape Proposal, made from ripstop nylon, a tent pole and rope,and Color Intervention, built from plexiglass and wood.The following year he made Horizon Color Study No. 1, a charcoal and watercolor drawing,and Green Square, an hour-long audio-visual collaboration with Erik Russell intended to be heard through headphones.He returned to digital media with Proximity Is Not Enough and Frame, both from 2025.
