Kubilay Odabas is a cartoonist from Istanbul who turns everyday scenes into short animated GIFs. His work focuses on ordinary moments such as charging phones, smoking cigarettes and waiting through idle time, often built around plays of light and shadow. His character design, a figure with only a few strands of hair, gives his animations a distinct, understated look.
In At Door, a figure ties his shoelaces in a public hallway rather than sit still, timed to keep a motion-activated light on. Cooking For Sleeping Family uses light and shadow to reveal a person asleep on a couch in the background while a meal is prepared. Lover & Liker points to the longing for affection that can go unmet in a world of social media likes. Notification shows the glow of a phone keeping its owner awake as they wait for a message from someone special. Doing Nothing #8 is one of a series of individual 1/1 pieces showing a figure waiting, bored, for some sense of purpose.
