KRANKARTA is a generative artist who writes code-based algorithms modeled on natural processes, from mountain ranges to particle collisions.,Originally from the UK, he is based in Sweden and trained as a chemical engineer before working as a data analyst. He began making generative art around the start of the NFT wave in early 2021 and releases his work on fx(hash), the generative art platform on the Tezos blockchain.
KRANKARTA defines generative art broadly, as the act of setting rules and conditions that let a process generate a finished piece, comparing it to a painter's brushstroke or a valley shaped by a glacier. His early series, Cloud Atlas, 2021, and Drumlin, 2021, generate mountainous, topographic forms, while Finding Herschel, 2021, applies the same approach to particle simulations. He has cited fellow Tezos-based artists Loïc Schwaller, Ahmad Moussa, Liam Egan and Jacek Markusiewicz as influences on his dithering, colour and shader work.
His 2022 fx(hash) project Atoms' Gaze grew out of experiments simulating particle collisions confined to a single pixel each, producing geometric trails that KRANKARTA compared to crystalline structures and to the tracks left in a Wilson cloud chamber. Its follow-up, Quantum Folly, 2022, reworked the same algorithm in Vanilla JS and GLSL to generate Brutalist-inspired architectural forms rendered in crystalline texture. KRANKARTA has released one collaborative work, Firestarter, made with Orfhlaith Egan and inspired by her paintings of abstract fire.In November 2022 he took part in a group interview with algorist Roman Verostko, asking him when an algorithm becomes art.
