Joyce Liu is a Taiwanese-American designer and illustrator based in Washington who works in the motion graphics industry.,Her work is expressive, energetic and maximalist, built from shapes and colors that melt into one another using tools such as ZBrush, Blender and Photoshop.
Her creative process begins with a feeling or a fleeting idea, which she develops into rough sketches before refining a composition in three-dimensional and digital painting software. She has described the feeling of turning an idea into a finished piece by saying, “I love that I can take an idea or mood that's just in my head and bring it to life. It feels like magic.” Throughout her work she hides Critters, quirky cat-like creatures that originated during her early explorations in 3D and have become part of her artistic practice.
Liu has worked as a designer at the studio Oddfellows on a commercial motion graphics campaign for Savage X Fenty. On the Solana NFT project Okay Bears, she served as art director. She has also worked on the art team for the Solana project Claynosaurz and spoke at the Solana Hacker House in Taipei in 2023.
