Jonathan Zawada (Australian, b. 1981) is a multidisciplinary artist who works across painting, drawing, sculpture, video, installation and object design.,His work explores the interplay between technology and human experience, and he weaves digital and analogue methods together.,He has also made album art for musicians including Flume and Mark Pritchard.
Zawada was born in Perth and taught himself several programming languages in the mid 1990s.,For about a decade he worked mainly in fashion and music as a web designer, illustrator, art director and graphic designer.He then shifted his practice towards personal and gallery based projects.He has said that art is inward-looking, while design exists to serve others.After years in Los Angeles, Zawada moved to the rural Australian countryside.,
Zawada began making record artwork for bands including Wolfmother and Tame Impala. He later made covers for electronic acts such as The Presets, Baauer, Rustie and Mark Pritchard. He exhibited a version of the artwork for Flume's Skin about a year before the album was released.His world-building projects with Flume have won multiple ARIA awards.His Affordances series of furniture began with the Y.O.R.I. table, which holds together without fastenings such as glue or screws.
His practice has long included self-made systems that turn invisible data into visual form. He has used AI to produce imagery that breaks his habitual thinking, and says it is not a replacement for making by hand.He has exhibited internationally, including at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.
