Joëlle Snaith is a designer and audiovisual artist based in London whose work is sculpted from the frequency data of music, translating sound into real-time generative visuals.,She combines a parallel career in UX and product design with an art practice built on live performance and audiovisual synchronicity.
Working mainly in Vuo, a node-based visual programming environment, she feeds live audio frequency data into rule-based systems she builds herself, shaping animation and behaviour around specific frequency bands and their loudness. In live shows she manipulates additional parameters through a MIDI controller in real time, adding a performative, improvisational layer since she has no control over what a DJ plays.Her partner Eaton Crous designs the accompanying sound using generative systems built in Ableton Live and Max for Live,and she describes the resulting compositions as deeply personal, an echo of the emotions and memories she has while listening to music.
She has served as the visual artist for the electronic musician and DJ Richie Hawtin, touring internationally with him,,and is a resident artist at FOLD, an artist-led club and arts space in London.,Earlier in her career she created live visuals for the musician Andy Stott, including at MIRA Festival in Barcelona in 2015.
In 2022 she released Sound Totem 01 and collaborated with the artist Ana Maria Caballero on The Public, a work pairing poetry with her audio-reactive visuals.,In 2023 she released She, a seven-part NFT video series,,as part of “Sonic Alchemy”, an online exhibition of generative sound art curated by Unit London.
