Javier Tomeo is a digital artist based in Bangkok, Thailand, whose background in graphic design and JavaScript programming led him into generative art and artificial intelligence as tools for visual storytelling. His work draws on mid-20th-century contemporary art, antiquity and Renaissance art, as well as photography and film, particularly Italian cinema of the 1960s.
His series charcoal traces explores the interaction of mediums such as pastels and AI in an attempt to capture elusive imagery.A thematic offshoot, Creatures of the Night, turns to nocturnal animals such as cats and owls, which folklore often casts as guides to transcendental experience. The pieces are rendered in a style influenced by Impressionism, with blurred silhouettes and interplays of light and shadow.
In Anabasis, a generative collection of 256 unique pieces written in p5.js, each work is generated at the moment of minting and released on the platform fx(hash).Far Horizons is a collection of surrealistic landscapes made with AI assistance and released on the platform Foundation.
In 2022, he was a winner of the 1st Claire AI Contest, juried by the artist Claire Silver, alongside Anna Dart and Nate Talbot.In 2023, his work was included in “AI Surrealism”, a show of more than 140 works by 100 artists staged at The Oculus in New York by Superchief Gallery NFT and the platform Foundation.His work has also been shown at the K Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, at Art Basel Miami's Sunset Synergy event with MetaMask and Hennessy, and at Unit London's “E-motions” exhibition.
