Jason Ting (American, b. 1986) is a new media artist who creates abstract animated visuals exploring light, color, and motion. Born in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, he studied Interdisciplinary Computing and the Arts at the University of California, San Diego, and lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut.,He worked for more than a decade as a software engineer before returning to creative coding in 2020.
His work draws on natural phenomena such as rushing water, cloudy skies, flocking birds, and outer space, using color, texture, and motion to create different moods in each piece. He began working with creative-coding tools such as Processing and p5.js, and later moved to GLSL shaders and TouchDesigner, which let him iterate on his animations in real time. He began exploring programmable LEDs to bring his animations into physical, large-scale light sculptures.
That research led to Lumina, a generative light sculpture of six glowing tubes shown at Saint George Hall in Marfa, Texas, presented alongside Art Blocks in 2023. Each tube cycles every minute through a randomized combination of fifteen generative animations and ten color palettes, producing scenes he describes as ranging “from vibrant rainbow portals to rolling blue-gold waves”. Seating on either side of the piece invites paired viewers to watch each other in its shifting light, which Ting calls “a proxy for connection”. Lumina extends a lineage of light-based installation that includes James Turrell's Skyspaces and Dan Flavin's fluorescent light works at Chinati.
