James Andrew is a self-taught fine art landscape photographer based in Calgary, Alberta.He photographs the aurora, storm light, and lakes of the Canadian Rockies and the Alberta prairie, returning to the same locations across multiple seasons until conditions align.,Andrew worked as an electrician before turning to photography in 2018.,
He began photographing in 2018 to document his young daughter. He soon started driving into the Rockies alone on his days off, a habit that left him calmer than he had felt in years. The turning point came on a November night when he drove two hours to Peyto Lake in -30°C cold after a fellow photographer texted that the aurora might appear.He hiked to the viewpoint in darkness and saw the northern lights for the first time in his life, producing the image Aurora over Peyto Lake.,He spent the next three years developing his craft before becoming a full-time photographer.
At Abraham Lake, Uprising captures methane ice bubbles trapped beneath the ice in winter, made after multiple winters of return visits before the ice, snow cover, and light aligned.,On the Alberta prairie, Endure shows a weathered barn lit by the last light breaking beneath a retreating storm, photographed in the brief window before darkness closed in.,At Bow Lake in Banff National Park, Chromatic Majesty recorded two rainbows arcing over the water as alpenglow lit the surrounding peaks, an unplanned moment Andrew photographed handheld after a storm broke during an overcast morning shoot.His limited-edition Master Collection prints, produced on archival Hahnemühle German Etching paper or acrylic facemount, are released in editions of 10 or 25 and retired once sold out.Andrew's work has been shown in three Calgary exhibitions, including a ten-piece solo exhibition in a downtown office building, and featured twice through Hello Art.
