Anders Hoff, who works under the name inconvergent, is a Norwegian generative artist who writes agent-based algorithms that mimic the growth patterns of natural forms such as flower petals or branching networks.,,He starts from a highly organized structure and gradually disrupts it, searching for results that sit between order and chaos.
Hoff discovered generative art at 16 after finding Complexification, a site of agent-based animations by Jared Tarbell, and began copying and then adapting its algorithms.Born in Nannestad, Norway, he studied applied mathematics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, completed a master's degree in numerical mathematics in 2012, and moved to Oslo, where he has worked as a search and information-retrieval consultant.,
His algorithms are agent-based: simple rules govern how points or vertices on a mesh interact with their neighbors, and the overall pattern emerges from that interaction rather than being drawn directly. He publishes his code on GitHub for other programmers to reuse.
In 2014 six of his works were shown in a dual exhibition at Kunstplass5 in Oslo, for which he was selected from more than seventy applicants, and he presented his algorithms at the Piksel festival that year.His work has been included as an example of generative art in surveys of the field.In 2017 a tweet of his introduced the artist Thomas Lin Pedersen to generative art, sparking Pedersen's own practice.
