humanbydefinition

Bio

humanbydefinition is a generative artist and creative coder who works with ASCII characters as a visual medium. They write open-source tools, including a fast P5.js-compatible GLSL shader that turns pixel grids into ASCII characters, and share the code on GitHub.

In 2024 they released ASCIIMATA16 on fx(hash), a generative exploration of cellular automata that turns a 512 by 512 pixel canvas into an evolving grid of ASCII characters, using 16-color palettes that reference classic computing and pixel art, from Commodore 64 and CGA to Endesga-16 and PICO-8. A further fx(hash) project was later announced as continuing the same approach of shifting ASCII-based imagery.
