Hieroglyphica is a generative artist who has collaborated with the poet Ana María Caballero since 2022 on text-based generative projects exploring permanence, play and poetics.The artist describes the practice on their own website as “algorithmic art human-made”.Their collaborative project Poems in the Public Domain invites readers to generatively annotate classic and public-domain poems, reframing the reader's role in a poem's afterlife.
Poems in the Public Domain pairs classic poems with generative techniques that render dynamic handwriting, algorithmic paper ageing and coded stains to visualize annotations from multiple readers. For UNIT London's 2023 exhibition “After Ginsberg”, Hieroglyphica and Caballero created a special edition of the project that let visitors communally annotate Allen Ginsberg's 1980 poem Fourth Floor, Dawn, Up All Night Writing Letters.A related special edition, MILK. by Gertrude Stein, applies the project's annotation process to the writing of Gertrude Stein.
In 2022 Hieroglyphica released Absorbed, a long-form generative collection made in collaboration with the studio Parameta and the audio brand KEF.A follow-on work, Re-Absorbed, anchored a solo retrospective at KEF Music Gallery in London on August 23, 2024, shown alongside early iPad-based generative works that traced a progression toward Absorbed. Viewers used laptops and KEF Mu7 headphones to zoom into and pan around Re-Absorbed in ultra-high resolution as it was drawn.
In April 2023 Hieroglyphica and Caballero contributed to “Re-Placement”, an exhibition presented by Fakewhale and Nighttimestory that paired physical and blockchain-based artworks with artists including Mit Borrás, Jesse Draxler and Mario Klingemann.In 2022 Hieroglyphica also made Holiday Card, an audiovisual collaboration with their daughter, iAmSienna, originally gifted to friends and family before being minted as an edition of five on Tezos.
