Hideki Tsukamoto (British, b. 1976) is a pseudonymous generative artist who renders large-scale cosmic and destructive events in intricate procedural detail. Working from transaction-hash data and trademark circular motifs drawn from scientific concepts, he creates work that carries thematic continuity across his output. He rose to prominence in 2021 with the Art Blocks Curated release of Singularity, which sold out in 40 minutes.
Singularity depicts giant black holes of varying turbulence, symmetry, chaos, intricacy, mass and force, with each work's characteristics generated from its transaction hash.,The 1,024-piece Art Blocks Curated collection was minted in 2020.,It later appeared in Sotheby's 2021 Natively Digital saleand in two lots of Sotheby's 2023 Grails: Property from an Iconic Digital Art Collection Part II.Tsukamoto describes it as part of a four-part series exploring space, creation, matter and void. The second instalment, Fusion, depicts microscopic forms and was released in October 2021 using generative technology he and his team built from scratch. In his own words, “with Singularity it was sun-lit clouds, with Fusion it was Butterfly Koi”.His work is precise and often graphic, and is organised around distance transformations, noise-based modulation, modularity and recursion.
Tsukamoto is self-taught, and his career began in the 1990s when the UK Ministry of Defence recognised his ability to create art with code. The MoD commissioned him to create landscapes for early VR helicopter simulators. He went on to design generative artwork for album and book covers in print. He later moved into video games, working across multiple programming languages, frameworks and engines. His fascination with procedural generation began in the early 1990s with the work of William Latham, a pioneer of generative art. He has also cited cinematography and film as influences on the cinematic quality of his work.
That cinematic quality is exemplified by Monument, a limited edition of 128 generative works that opened in July 2024 in partnership with The Disruptive Gallery. The collection uses the characteristics of a camera lens and bokeh as its drawing primitive. Eight layers of form are composited with visual effects including colour lookups, depth of field and film grain. In 2023 he released Immortal, visualising destruction on the largest of scales as “a fleeting burst of burning light before the void”.The project was released through partnerships with MakersPlace and Digital Art Fair Hong Kong, alongside work by David Ariew.,His 2021 collection Cypher forms the first part of Apex, an experimental world-building project whose animated reticules are drawn entirely in-chain by the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
