hexeosis is the working name of Erik Buth, an artist who builds geometric, infinitely looping animations centered on the hexagon, a shape that tiles a plane without gaps and repeats itself at every scale. What began as a nights-and-weekends project on Tumblr in 2013 has grown into film, VR, NFTs, and apps, all built around the same idea of infinite zoom.
Before starting hexeosis, Buth had already been coding since 1979, and was working as a creative director in the Los Angeles motion design industry, editing film title sequences, directing TV commercials, and leading projects at studios including Blind, Brand New School, and 72andSunny. The project grew to more than 150,000 followers on Tumblr, and the hexagon-based geometry and infinite zoom that defined the earliest GIFs have carried through into hexeosis's later film, VR, and app work.
In hx-01, a 36-minute animated short film that Buth crowdfunded and made entirely on his own, designing, animating, editing, and scoring it himself, mandalas and cosmic landscapes unfold in a non-narrative sequence of pattern and rhythm, work that was covered by Boing Boing and Vice's The Creators Project.He also created Platonic Frequency, an interactive, walkable version of his geometric worlds sponsored by Viverse, and Breathington, a timed breathing exercise app released on the Apple App Store and Google Play.,hexeosis has minted animated GIFs and looping videos as NFTs on Ethereum, Base, and Tezos since 2019, releasing work through SuperRare, Objkt, Foundation, and Manifold, and in early 2020 was one of the signatories of the Royalties Letter, an artist-led effort urging platforms to build royalties into NFT smart contracts.,His work was included in the “24 SEEDERS” installation, part of Matt Kane's contribution to the exhibition “How To Do Your Own Research” at Kunsthalle Zürich in 2022.
