hazed is a British artist who reworks found and self-shot footage into layered, distorted portraits of what he calls a reconstructed version of the world. He grew up in a working-class part of England without formal art training and did not begin taking art seriously until 2022.
As a child he made gaming montages, teaching himself video editing software by age nine, and by his mid-teens he was producing music remixes that drew a million YouTube views before the channel was hacked and the work lost. Tame Impala's album Lonerism was a formative influence during this period, and its layering of different eras and textures became the creative blueprint he has followed since. Discouraged by people around him who saw creative work as pointless, he stopped making art for several years. He has described that period as the worst of his life.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, he adopted the handle Hazed Lockdown and took a factory job as a welder alongside his father. Encouraged by the artist Chloe, he returned to image-making in Photoshop and created Losing Myself, a processed, degraded self-portrait that he shared publicly at her urging. The piece drew attention from the on-chain art community, and he began taking his practice seriously from 2022 onward.
He builds his pieces by layering analog degradation onto footage he sources or films himself. He runs video through analog hardware from the 1990s and 2000s, outputs it to CRT monitors, and films the screen on a Sony Hi8 camcorder before scanning the results back in. For many works, he prints every frame of a video, alters each one by hand with paint, crayon or scratches, then scans and resequences them.
His reworking of Tame Impala footage, sent unprompted to the band's creative director, led to a screen credit on one of the band's music videos. A similarly unsolicited approach to Suicideboys' team led to a commission designing visuals for a sixty-foot screen on the group's US arena tour.His piece Final Touch was displayed in Times Square, and in November 2024 he took part in a group exhibition presented by Hildabroom Management, Colonna Contemporary and SuperRare.,
