GISELXFLOREZ, known as Gisel Florez, is a photographer and conceptual artist who works with manual camera and video techniques to explore light and time.,In 2019 she began Transmissions of Light, a series of long-exposure photographs that capture the unseen spectrum of LED, phosphorus and neon light emissions in urban spaces, each exposure the product of inertia, force and aperture within the camera.
A first-generation Cuban American from New Jersey, GISELXFLOREZ studied at the Rhode Island School of Design before moving to New York. She worked there as a digital assistant to photographers including Richard Pierce, Greg Kadel and Alexi Hay before Barneys New York asked her to build its first in-house photography studio. From 2003 she ran her own commercial still-life studio, shooting for clients including L'Oréal, Revlon, ESPN and The New York Times.,In 2018 she began tokenizing limited editions of her photography on KnownOrigin and, with initial support from SuperRare, learned the developing Ethereum blockchain ecosystem.
In 2020 she co-founded Women of Crypto Art (WOCA) together with several other women artists and collectors, a community supporting women working in blockchain and digital art.,WOCA members collaborated on an interactive tarot deck in which each artist created one card of the major arcana, coded to generate a new reading each day.In 2022 her work featured in the 24 Seeders installation at “DYOR”, an exhibition on crypto art and blockchain culture curated by Nina Roehrs at Kunsthalle Zürich.
Fortune named her to its NFTy 50 list of NFT community figures in 2021.In 2024 Flower Colored Light 3, made in collaboration with Sasha Stiles, was included in Sotheby's Lumen Prize Anniversary Auction.,She has continued to develop MoonLanguage, pairing handheld photographs of the moon with verified quotes about the moon drawn from interviews, manuscripts and recordings across several regions and historical eras, each mapped to a key on a piano so the collection can be played as an instrument.
