Frederik Vanhoutte, also known as Winterbloed and wblut, is a Belgian generative artist and creative coder who also works as a medical radiation physicist.,,By day he translates medical data into cancer treatments at a Belgian university hospital, where he heads the medical physics department, and by night he codes generative works exploring physical, biological, and computational systems.,
Vanhoutte discovered Processing while pursuing his PhD in physics, and began sharing work online in 2004 under the pseudonym Wintermute, later shortened to wblut.,His first minted work, Lost Kiez (2020), established the generative geometry that runs through his practice. Since then he has worked across pen plots, prints, and cyanotypes alongside digital and generative code, treating each medium as a vehicle for an expanding set of mental constructs.
Chromatic dazzle is a 511-piece collection of generative geometry released on fx(hash). Ring feeder, specimen 17 takes a calmer, rotating approach that invites the viewer to zoom into its shifting details. In Lamia, he built an isometric presentation of John Keats's 1819 poem of the same name, cycling through its 728 lines at a rate of one line every eight seconds.For Fakewhale's 2023 group release “GENERATIVE FW CROSS”, shown at Valuart gallery in Lugano, he presented Iso Boneyard, high-resolution generative geometry rendered in custom code and Processing as part of what he calls his “isoverse.”In Winterkammer (2025), created for the Responsive Dreams festival, fragmented windows reveal shifting views into the isoverse, with crystalline landscapes rendered in an isometric style inspired by old encyclopedia illustrations and schoolbook diagrams.
Vanhoutte is listed as an artist in the archive of ZKM, the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany.He has described his approach to code simply: “Code gives me a way to play, to explore the odd behavior of our world, to find the systems beneath it all.”,
