Joe Horner, known as Flower Blocks, is a UK-based photographer and visual artist who works primarily with flowers.,He arranges flowers, often in dense concentration, into surreal photographic compositions that push the organic form of each bloom into unexpected territory.For Horner the process is also personal and therapeutic, a way of processing anxiety through the act of collecting and arranging flowers.
Horner's practice traces to his upbringing with a mother who was an avid gardener. Her encouragement to take flowers out of their usual context and observe how they reacted set him on his creative path. He holds a Fine Art degree from Chelsea School of Art.,In an interview published in 2023, he said his current practice began around 2018, when he found he had written “Freeze Some Flowers” in a notebook.
His images set the natural beauty of flowers against the harsher realities of their surroundings, inviting viewers to consider how all things are interconnected.He works with live rather than dried flowers, gathering blooms from the wild near his home or sourcing specific varieties for commissioned pieces, and has described the resulting work as a celebration of the seasons.His photographs have appeared in Vogue, Elle, Kinfolk and Nowness, and he has received the Portrait of Britain, Palm Awards and Portrait of Humanity awards.,
