Fabrizio Plessi (Italian, b. 1940) makes video installations that often use water and fire, which he calls “focal points giving energy to our lives”. He was born in Reggio Emilia and has made his home in Venice for decades. Water, air and fire recur as themes in installations such as Mare verticale, Naufragio della pittura and Roma II.
At “Documenta 8”, Plessi showed Roma, an installation of monitors laid face up in a horseshoe formation, showing a continuous image of flowing water. Tempo Liquido, from 1993, combines 21 monitors with a mill wheel and a steel tank. It was included in the ZKM exhibition “Writing the Future” in 2020. In 2000 he made the bridge installation Arch of Remembrance for the Braunschweig Light Trail. Mare verticale was erected in front of the Giardini in Venice for the Biennale.
