enigmatriz is a digital artist from Argentina who reworks classical paintings and archival photographs into collages built from ASCII, the text-based character art format that predates the modern internet. He studied graphic design before discovering digital art, and his work centers on abstraction, sometimes blended with figurative elements.
His process begins in online archives, where he searches through public-domain images for pictures that catch his attention and feel overlooked. He runs these images through image-to-ASCII tools and layers the resulting characters, symbols, and text over the original picture, so that a portrait's texture and shading are built from letters, or a landscape breaks open into a field of text. As he has put it, “When working with ASCII, what I like and find particularly interesting is the blend between hundred old paintings, photographs etc. and modern technologies”.
