Duckylemon is the artist name of Barbara Johanna Billeiter, a surrealist painter from Franconia, Germany. Her densely detailed, multi-layered paintings explore contrasts of darkness and light, a fullness of detail some describe as horror vacui, or fear of empty space. The eyes of her characters matter most to her, a gateway to the soul that can speak without words, and she leaves their meaning open to each viewer's own interpretation.
As a child she showed early talent, winning third place in a European school competition with a painting of a phoenix rising from the ashes. Her path to becoming a full-time artist was interrupted by marriage and family life, and it was only after the death of her husband, when she was 30, that she returned to painting. She enrolled to study art in Darmstadt, Germany, and went on to graduate with an art diploma. Around 2016 she developed her signature style, blending pop art and surrealism into the character-based portraits that define her work.
