Dominikus is a generative artist from Germany whose work explores the interplay between light and shadow, drawing on a background in computer science and data visualization.He is Dr. Dominikus Baur, who earned a PhD in Media Informatics from the University of Munich (LMU) and holds a professorship in Generative Design and Creative AI at Hochschule Munich.
Baur's earlier career was in data visualization: after postdoctoral research at Columbia University and the University of Calgary, he worked as a freelance designer and developer, building web-based visualizations for clients including the OECD, Google and Microsoft Research.
As Dominikus, he released The Inner World on Art Blocks in September 2022, a 400-work generative series that asks whether inner space is larger than outer space. Each piece renders from one or more circular 'cores' representing centers of personality, which spawn tendrils of thought and emotion that connect to each other or reach outward, rendered in one of two styles across palettes ranging from cool and gloomy to cheerful and dramatic.
The same year, Kate Vass Galerie presented his series Fractured Lines, six generative works — including Outside, Looking In, The Apparitions and Ascension — coded in raw JavaScript and the Canvas API and released on FoundationApp, each paired with a signed plotter drawing and fine art print.Outside, Looking In was later shown in Kate Vass Galerie's group exhibition “PHYGITAL”, alongside artists including Iskra Velitchkova, Anna Ridler, Kjetil Golid and Harold Cohen.
