Diego Mac is a Brazilian dance director, choreographer and 3D artist based in Porto Alegre who creates dance works using 3D animation and simulation software.,He has worked with dance and media technology since 2006, and since the early 2020s has extended that practice into 3D simulation, the metaverse and NFTs.,
Mac graduated in dance from ULBRA and later completed a master's degree in Visual Poetics at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), with further specialization in the same field at Feevale.,His master's research, advised by Sandra Rey and supported by Brazil's CAPES funding agency, became O Colecionador de Movimentos, translating 48 movements from his memory into a video-based collection organized around ideas of movement, collection and hypertext.,The project drew on appropriated references including Julio Le Parc's Continuel Mobile, Alexander Calder's O Circo de Calder, Hélio Oiticica's Parangolés and Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet.Around 2006 he began working with video and media technologies in dance, creating Pas de Corn, a videodance work in which a corps of dancers formed from popcorn satirizes the dancer's body.He directs the dance company Macarenando Dance Concept.
His first work in this new direction, Sylphides 3.1, drew on the ballets La Sylphide (1832) and Les Sylphides (1909), replacing their aerial feminine figure with an androgynous, decentralized body that is soft, plastic and built from hyperflexible joints. He is part of Brashill, a movement led by the artists Ariel Gricio and Laura Faria that helps new artists enter blockchain and web3 art.In 2022 he received the Prêmio Açorianos de Dança as Personality of the Year for his work in 3D dance, and was later selected to exhibit work at NFT.NYC.,Following his selection for the 2023 Non Fungible Conference, his moving-image works were projected on building facades in Ghent and on digital billboards in Milan, Lisbon, Berlin and London. He was also invited to present work in an NFT auction held by the Italian auction house Pandolfini Casa d'Aste.,In 2023 his work was included in “Kinētechós”, a group show curated by Anna Utopia Giordano for the Morphrame gallery's pavilion at The Wrong Biennale.
