Dom Hofmann designs NFT projects around a small set of explicit rules, then lets collectors and participants explore what those rules make possible. Before working in NFTs he co-founded the short-form video app Vine in 2012.In 2021 he began releasing NFT collections on Ethereum, starting with the pixel art collection Blitmap and the text-based collection Loot.,
Hofmann also led development of Byte, described as a “spiritual successor” to Vine, which launched for iOS and Android in January 2020 and later shut down.Blitmap launched on May 30, 2021, as 100 pixel art originals.Collectors could then combine two Blitmaps to create 1,600 additional “siblings”, each pairing one piece's composition with another's palette. The Blitnauts, an expansion pack launched in September 2021, added 1,484 profile picture NFTs described as a “faction of sentient robots sworn to locate and protect the Blitmaps”.
Loot consisted of 8,000 tokens listing eight pieces of fantasy adventurer gear as plain text stored entirely on the blockchain, with no images or stats. It was free to claim aside from the network transaction fee, and the project has been described as “gamification with no game, or worldbuilding with no narrative”. Collectors could trade individual items out of their bags, and the project moved more than 65,300 ETH, over $183 million at the time, in total sales volume.,Adventure Gold, an ERC-20 token, launched as the Loot ecosystem's native currency to support participation in the project.Corruptions, released in November 2021, comprised 4,196 fully on-chain NFTs built around an insight mechanic that could “deviate” a token into a new piece, the first of which was called the “wilted rose”.
Hofmann was also one of ten co-founders, known as “Nounders”, behind the Nouns NFT project and DAO.On the debate over NFT creator royalties, he has said the argument is “a boring mechanical debate and an interesting cultural one”.
