Devi Parikh is a research scientist who also works as a generative artist, applying her background in artificial intelligence to non-photorealistic, abstract imagery.,With Abhishek Das, she releases work on Art Blocks made with small AI models designed and trained from scratch, rather than the large neural networks typically used to generate AI art.
Their 2023 collection Aragnation, a fixed edition of 128 unique artworks released on Art Blocks, renders playful, watercolor-like abstractions out of organic blob shapes and textures rather than pixels. Its models were trained on photographs of nature, landscapes, and urban settings taken by Das, so the generated pieces echo his photography in broad strokes. The collection was conceived as a question about assumptions in AI art, namely whether it must be powered by large neural networks or resemble photographs, paintings, or collages of them.
Parikh has also released the Art Blocks Factory collection Cushions with Das, and a solo project, Confluence, on BrainDrops, alongside further work on fxhash and Foundation.,,In February 2022 she appeared on Art Blocks' After Dinner Mints interview series, which profiles leading figures in the generative art community.Outside her art practice, she is a research scientist at Facebook AI Research (FAIR) and an associate professor in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech, holding a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and research interests spanning computer vision, natural language processing, and AI for creativity.
