Dario Lanza (Spanish, b. 1975) is a generative artist whose code-based paintings translate the gesture and physicality of Abstract Expressionism into algorithmic form.,,,He trained as an engineer, holds a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies, and teaches at the Fine Arts Faculty of Complutense University of Madrid. He calls his practice a balance between control and randomness: “too much control leads to lifelessness, while pure randomness results in chaos”.
Lanza trained as an engineer before moving into 3D rendering and, later, academic research on cinematic matte painting, publishing papers in journals such as Leonardo and the Journal of Film and Video.,In September 2022 he released Catharsis on gmStudio,a collection of 999 individually titled generative paintings that channel the energy and physicality of Abstract Expressionists such as Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline without imitating their styles.,Each piece takes its title from one of 999 jazz compositions, and the algorithm itself evolves across the run, moving from restrained, hesitant marks toward denser, more urgent compositions. Its underlying structure also links works fifty iterations apart, so a piece continues visually into others in that sequence and collectors can combine them into diptychs or triptychs.,
He later released Ariadna through Vivid Gallery on Bitcoin, a generative homage to Greek vases and the myths of Ariadne and Penelope, where a single winding thread traces each vessel's surface.,He also released Frank through Art Blocks Studio, a 163-work long-form project in which each piece corresponds to one entry from The Diary of Anne Frank, built from concrete textures, drifting light and fragments of her own reconstructed handwriting.,His work has been shown at venues including “Art Basel Miami”, “NFT Paris” and the “Lumen Prize 2013 World Exhibition” tour, where he was a finalist.
