Darien Brito (Ecuadorian, b. 1987) is an audiovisual artist and creative coder whose generative systems and interactive installations draw on natural processes and complex systems.,Born in Quito, Brito is based in The Hague, where he holds a BA in music composition from the Royal Conservatory and an MA from the Institute of Sonology.
Brito trained as a composer, writing pieces for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, orchestra, electronics, theatre, film, opera and contemporary dance.He taught himself to code while building software to debug the chaotic signals he used in his compositions, and the visual results of that process pulled him toward making generative art and graphics for their own sake.
In September 2023 Brito showed Laterals and Liminal lattice in “GEN/GEN: Generative Generations” at Gazelli Art House, an exhibition tracing generative and computational art across generations.Laterals, built from cubes, spheres and lines arranged by noise distributions, extended techniques Brito had first developed for the distorted forms of an earlier project, Vahria. The work was minted on the Art Blocks Engine, whose tight limits on code length and on-chain data storage Brito has said push artists toward technical and aesthetic solutions they might not otherwise find.
Brito's work has been shown at venues including Espacio Fundación Telefónica in Peru, the Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Germany, Sónar Festival in Spain, Mutek Festival in Canada, and the Venice Biennale in Italy.
