Daniel Ambrosi is an artist based in Half Moon Bay, California, who combines large-scale landscape photography with artificial intelligence. In 2011 he devised a form of computational photography that generates immersive landscape images. His Dreamscapes add an enhanced version of DeepDream, a computer vision program that grew out of Google engineers' wish to visualise the inner workings of deep learning models, to that workflow.
Ambrosi holds a Bachelor of Architecture and a Masters in 3D Graphics from Cornell University. The software engineers Joseph Smarr and Chris Lamb customised DeepDream so that it could run on his very large images. He places himself at the “AI-augmented” end of the AI art spectrum, because the software serves an artistic intent that preceded the tool. He prints the work on backlit tension fabric using digital dye sublimation.
