André da Costa, who works online as dacosta_works, is a French-Portuguese artist who creates black-and-white illustrations through drawing, painting and scanning. He works with ink, watercolour and coffee, scanning the results with a fax-format scanner to create a black-and-white dither texture from which he composes characters and scenes.
Da Costa entered the NFT space in February 2020, working first on Ethereum without sales success. He joined the platform Hic et Nunc and credits its community with opening up his current art practice. His process centres on his series Inky Beasts and Hollow Pixels. He has also released the generative project Missingno on the platform fxhash, and made Hollow Pixels available on the platform Teia.He points to a range of influences absorbed largely by chance, including the painter Paul Klee, the printmakers Hokusai and Hiroshige, and the photographer Michael Kenna.
