culturehacker, also known as Lance Weiler, is a storyteller and media artist who blends film, photography and code with artificial intelligence, the internet of things, augmented reality and virtual reality. He came to art after two decades in film and photography, beginning with hand-processed 16mm shorts before moving into commercial production, including music videos and feature films.,
An alumnus of the Sundance Screenwriters Lab, he became a Professor of Professional Practice at Columbia University, where he founded the school's Digital Storytelling Lab.In 2011 his work was shown in “New Frontier”, Sundance's exhibition of installations blending film, interactivity, mobile technology and multimedia.In 2021 he began the everyday project, pledging to make a new artwork each day and releasing the results as NFTs and prints, largely through Instagram.On December 16, 2021 he minted Fluttering Motion, an edition of ten.
Where There's Smoke is an immersive installation built from roughly 3,200 35mm fire photographs his father, a volunteer firefighter, took between 1968 and 1988. First presented at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, where it was named one of Forbes' “Top XR Installations of 2019”, it was shown at ArtYard from June 17 to October 1, 2023, combining documentary, immersive theater and interactive technology such as geofenced audio and real-time visitor tracking. The installation's planned tour incorporated dynamic NFT tickets designed to evolve over the course of a visitor's journey, and live shows during which Weiler would create layered digital artworks in real time, minted as generative NFTs.
