Clint Fulkerson (American, b. 1980) makes abstract drawings, paintings and murals composed of hand-drawn marks that accumulate according to rules he sets for himself, in the tradition of geometric abstraction.Working mostly in pen, ink and gouache, he uses tessellations, concentric stripes and dots as analogies for natural systems, from geological strata to particles and moments in time.
Fulkerson grew up in Maine and earned a BFA in metalsmithing from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2003, working initially as a jeweler before turning, around 2010, to monochromatic drawing on paper to simplify his tools.,He began drawing gridded tessellations triangle by triangle according to rules governing the size of adjacent shapes, a hand-drawn process he later recognized as a form of generative art. His first wall drawing, Dissipate, became a touchstone for this approach, combining precision with an organic, diagrammatic quality.The process led to public art commissions, including Blue Nebula #2, a 2015 mural for Facebook's New York office, and a 600-foot hand-drawn and printed wallcovering for Google's Boulder, Colorado office in 2017, made in collaboration with Designtex.,
His work has been shown in the solo exhibition “Fluid Geometry” at the University of Southern Maine's AREA Gallery in 2017,and in group exhibitions at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art and the Portland Museum of Art.,At the end of 2020 Fulkerson began minting work on OpenSea and Hic et Nunc, and has since released NFT projects across Tezos, Ethereum and Solana, including proof of work – color (2022), a piece translating the numbers 1 to 1,300 into a grid of ten hand-drawn colors that the artist has described as retroactively inspired by Hanne Darboven and Roman Opalka.,He has also used the AI tool Emprops OpenStudio to generate long-form AI works from his own drawings, feeding them in as texture references for Stable Diffusion models.
