Christian Bök (Canadian, b. 1969) is a poet and conceptual artist who builds books around extreme formal constraints, from lipograms and Rubik's cube permutations to a poem encoded directly into the DNA of a bacterium.,,One of Canada's leading experimental writers, Bök spent seven years on Eunoia, a bestselling 2001 book in which each of five chapters uses only one vowel, winning the Griffin Poetry Prize in 2002.
Bök's most ambitious project, The Xenotext, set out to encode a sonnet, Orpheus, into the DNA of a bacterium, with a companion sonnet, Eurydice, written back into the protein the organism produces in response.After twenty-five years of work, Bök completed the project, intending the poem to persist long after human civilization ends.Bök read from The Xenotext and from FIFTY DAYS AT ILIAM, a generative collaboration with Sarah Ridgley, at theVERSEverse's 2025 re:VERSE poetry symposium.,
Bök's other books submit language to comparable constraints: Crystallography (1994) treats poetry as a form of crystallization, while 'Pataphysics (2001) traces the influence of the French writer Alfred Jarry on twentieth-century poetry. Bök also edited Ground Works: Avant-Garde for Thee, a 2002 anthology of Canadian literary experimentation from 1965 to 1985.
In 1997 Bök made NICKEL LINOLEUM, a set of images pressed from 27 nickels on a photocopier to mark the publication of Darren Wershler's Nicholodeon. Decades later Bök adapted the same 27 images into an NFT collection called The Incantation of Fortunes. Each buyer's locked 'fortune' contributes one stanza to a poem that Bök has promised never to publish elsewhere. Only collectors who pool their tokens can piece the whole poem together.BIBLIOMECHANICS, exhibited at the 2023 Paris show “POÈME SBJKT”, is a book made from twenty-seven Rubik's cubes, whose forty-three quintillion combinations per cube mean the reader's shuffling completes the work.,In 2021 Bök marked the 20th anniversary of Eunoia with EUNOIA (20TH ANNIVERSARY), seventy broadsheets sold as NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain, each paragraph coloured to match the vowel-colour scheme of Arthur Rimbaud's sonnet Voyelles.
Bök is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. Bök teaches Fine Art at Leeds Beckett University in Leeds, UK.
