Chris Ried is a data scientist and generative artist based in Nashville, Tennessee, whose coding-driven practice moves between experiments with objects and textures and visual studies of abstract concepts ranging from divine completeness to surrealism. Born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1986, he moved to the United States in 1997 and studied biotechnology and applied mathematics at the Rochester Institute of Technology, graduating in 2010.
Known in the NFT community as Generate Collective, Ried started the newsletter Generative Collective Weekly in 2020 and began releasing work on Hic et Nunc, Foundation, and fxhash the following year. In Molecular Travel #2, one work from that period, generative shapes mimic the bird's-eye view of a night town to express the unease that artificial urban lighting can bring. In 2021 he also founded CBayes Media Labs, and his weekly newsletter on generative art and creative coding has been recommended by other publications in the space, including the Gorilla Sun newsletter.
