Chris McCully is a multidisciplinary artist based in Austin, Texas, who works primarily as a photographer and producer for fashion marketing and creates generative art in his free time. His goal is to make generative work where every output feels like an abstract impasto painting, its process undecipherable even to viewers who know the piece is generative.
Between 2022 and 2023, he released a long series of generative algorithms on fx(hash), including Attractor, Ailerons, Icarus, and Bullet Train. In TEMPEST, released in May 2023, vibrant, expressive, paint-like compositions of ships, waves, clouds, and flying figures portray a violent, windy storm. For Zone Harmonics, made for the gallery Dawn Contemporary and released on the newly launched platform Alba.art in June 2023, he built a custom “dream font” system for a series of generative posters and flyers. Each flyer mimics the look of a real print run, complete with varying print quality, sizing errors, and inking inconsistencies. That October, he released A Pile, To Be Sorted on fx(hash). His work has been curated by Dawn Contemporary and shown at NFC Paris.
