Chainleft is a blockchain native artist working in glitch art, on-chain art and conceptual art, who uses the blockchain itself as a canvas rather than only a way to store or transact images. His background is in data science and machine learning in fintech and e-commerce, and creative programming grew naturally out of his experience coding data visualizations. He identifies as a West Asian immigrant who settled in Central Europe.
In 2021, seeing early on-chain platforms such as int.art and Art Blocks gave him the same feeling as hanging a physical artwork on a wall, drawing him fully into NFTs. That same period convinced him that most 2021 NFT mints were unsustainable, and pushed him toward historical NFTs, pieces with immutable, timestamped origins, as a source of genuine scarcity in the space. In October 2022 he compiled a public timeline of on-chain NFT projects, including 2011's Punycodes, the 2015 Linagee Name Registrar, ChainFaces from 2020 and the on-chain game EtherOrcs from 2021.In 2023 he proposed the On-Chain Canon on the platform JPG, a project cataloguing works considered canonical within the on-chain NFT movement. In a public discussion about the proposal, he argued that what defines an on-chain NFT is “mostly about the permanence and persistence of an NFT”.In February 2024 he pushed back on the narrative that “EtherRocks shaped NFTs”, pointing out that EtherRocks were minted in 2017 but only became a meme in 2021.Around the same time he produced a further historical timeline tracing the progression of dynamic NFTs.
Released in 2023, his project Chaos Roads embeds an interactive painting, a piece of music and a poem in every token, each dynamically distorted at runtime by the Ethereum Virtual Machine.,,The collection explores the relationship between entropy and order. Token images grow more chaotic on their own, but collectors can push the entropy back and delay the chaos. Its mint site was also the first fully on-chain NFT mint site, and the first fully on-chain website able to both read from and write to the blockchain.,He has also produced Crimson Echo, a generative film stored entirely on Ethereum in which hundreds of voices tell the same story in different ways. The piece changes as its surrounding community takes action, including as donations flow toward humanitarian relief and messages of peace are recorded into it.
