Buba Viedma is a graphic designer and illustrator from Madrid, Spain, who works under the name Mentecalamar Studio.His work draws on surrealism, dream symbolism and a dark sense of humor, spanning commercial illustration for editorial and advertising clients as well as independent digital art.,
He began working in printing, design studios and advertising agencies in 2003, while training as an illustrator and taking on freelance jobs for small clients. In 2011 he started releasing that freelance work under the brand Mentecalamar Studio, and by early 2014 he had committed fully to the studio to work independently. His clients have included Google, El País, GQ, Forbes and National Geographic, among others.His illustration work has won an APIM Award for Best Press Illustration in 2018 and Silver Awards from the Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American design society SNDe in 2016 and 2017.
His work titled El Conejo y la Serpiente (The Rabbit and the Snake) was created for the 36 Days of Type illustration challenge in 2020.He also co-curated “7 Infiernos Expo” with the illustrator María Durán Montes, an exhibition marking the seventh anniversary of the Spanish music promoter and label Nooirax Producciones that gathered concert posters made by various artists over its seven years. His studio also designed the event's own poster.
